Brno – The first construction steps for the multifunctional hall that the city plans to build in the Brno exhibition grounds could begin this year. Brno city councilors have approved the demolition of two buildings that are necessary for the construction of the hall. The city announced this in a press release.
"A fundamental reorganization of the current spatial arrangement is necessary now that we are in the phase of adjusting the surrounding areas. We must remove a total of four buildings, two of which are owned by the city. This includes a garage and the so-called large warehouse, which is a technical equipment facility. At the request of Brno Communications, we made this decision as soon as possible so that the work could continue according to the planned schedule,” stated Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS).
The multifunctional hall, costing over 1.5 billion crowns, is intended to serve both culture and sports. The city has already requested an environmental impact assessment, and it is expected to be completed in 2023. The hall will have a capacity of 12,000 spectators for hockey, and could increase to 13,100 for musical concerts. Its height will be 30 meters to not compete in height with the neighboring Pavilion Z.
Transport services will be ensured both for cars arriving via the large city ring road and for public transport. A new stop and loop will be created at the Pisárky depot, and a bus will run along a new road directly around the hall. In the future, a cable car is also planned to transport passengers from the depot to the hall, to the Riviera swimming pool, and to the Bohunice campus. At the same time, the currently impassable exhibition grounds will become passable from the new stop to the Riviera, with a new footbridge leading across Bauerova Street.
