Brno - The Southern Moravian Building of the Year 2007 includes, among others, the campus of Masaryk University, the new headquarters of the Moravian State Archive, and the Brno grade-separated intersection at Hlinky. This was decided by the jury of the Southern Moravian Region Building Competition. A total of 39 projects competed for the title in seven categories. The most expensive construction among the winners is the grade-separated intersection at Hlinky, part of the so-called large city ring road and one of the largest transportation projects in Brno. Construction companies worked on the intersection for 2.5 billion for several years. The Moravian State Archive aimed to build a new headquarters for several decades. Since last year, it has had it; it cost almost 700 million crowns and has now also received recognition from architects. According to the jurors, the building is significant not only for Brno but for the entire country, and the architects managed the hi-tech style well.
Masaryk University Campus in Bohunice
The same justification applies to the Masaryk University campus, which is gradually being constructed right across from the archive. It is one of the largest investments in Czech education, costing approximately 5.5 billion crowns. The jury recognized the so-called Blue Stage for 1.5 billion, which includes 12 buildings, including the biomodel pavilion and the central library. Another stage of the university campus aimed for a bronze plaque for the winner last year, but did not succeed in competition against the terminal building at Brno-Tuřany Airport, Brno's central Freedom Square, or the golf course in Jinačovice. This year, the jury liked the so-called Blue Stage more than other projects such as the Brno Technology Incubator II, the Brno Business Park administrative center, or the reconstructed headquarters of the antimonopoly office. Each year, most of the constructions are from the regional capital, but this year more projects from outside Brno, about ten, were registered than in previous years. Successful projects include the sewage network in Těšany near Brno and the new pavilion of the Mendel Agricultural and Forestry University in Lednice. This year, unlike previous years, five projects that were built by Southern Moravian companies but outside the region were also competing. All five registered projects received honorary recognition. Construction companies, investors, and individuals could submit projects for the competition. The Brno City Hall also nominated its candidates. According to the organizers, the interest in the competition is greater than in previous years, when experts selected from three dozen constructions.
