Karlovy Vary – The Karlovy Vary Region has selected a study for the reconstruction of the building of the Secondary Vocational School of Ceramics and Glass in Karlovy Vary. From three proposals submitted by architectural firms, the expert group chose one that preserves part of the historic building. Based on the winning study, the region will prepare a project that will show the exact costs for the school's reconstruction, said the governor Petr Kubis (ANO) to reporters today. The proposal still needs to be approved by the council.
The expert jury particularly appreciated that the selected study sensitively approaches the historic building of the school and proposes its reconstruction, stated Jana Kaválková, head of the regional planning department. "A certain compromise was the proposal to demolish the residential building, along with other parts of the historic structure. This bold proposal brought the enormous advantage that it will be possible to organize the construction very well during teaching. So this proposal least interrupts the education that must take place throughout the construction period," Kaválková said.
In place of the part of the historic structure that the study proposes to demolish, a modern new building in the shape of an L will be constructed, which will also create an open space, Kaválková noted. According to the design, the new building will be four stories high with one underground floor, and its facade will be made of glass. The study also includes a community center or auditorium within the building. Thanks to the new building, the school could also save on operating costs.
The regional leadership has allocated 40 million crowns for the project documentation, of which 30 million will be invested next year and another ten million in the following year, the governor reported. The estimated costs for the reconstruction of the school are around 600 million crowns.
The ceramics school has already been operating under temporary conditions for more than two years, and its capacity and daily activities are significantly limited. The region has been dealing with the school's situation since 2017 when it was revealed that the structure of part of the building is significantly compromised. Since then, classes have been held in temporary accommodations in the remaining parts of the school.
