PLZEŇ - The reconstruction of the provostry and the church in Mariánská Týnice in the Plzeň region, the new building of the hospital in Domažlice, and the complex of the FLOP company in Sulkov near Plzeň have become the best buildings in the Plzeň region for the year 2005. The winning projects from 20 registered were announced by a seven-member jury at the ceremonial evening of the 11th year of the construction exhibition For Arch Plzeň 2006.
The Domažlice hospital won in the category of new buildings. Its designers were the AND studio from Prague and the Plzeň-based PPAA, with Skanska CZ as the contractor. "It is a high-quality and generous project, addressed with a higher standard both inside and outside. The moderate harmony in materials and their colors contributes to it, along with the high quality of the construction work," said jury chairwoman Anna Hostičková.
The designers made good use of the six-hectare plot with a view of the panorama of the Český Les. The original tube of the central hall, rising to the second floor, is bright, airy, and clear. The floors of the other wings ascend down the slope without dramatic transitions. The bed section, in a gentle arc, opens its arms to the hospital park, the jurors noted.
In the category of renovations, the Baroque provostry with the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary designed by Prague architect Jindřich Rineš won. The Plzeň-based company Stavoservis maintained a high standard of renovation and restoration work on this significant Baroque monument, the jury stated. They marked the approach as sensitive and witty. It is not necessary to complete the painting at all costs; even without it, the impression of the space is fascinating, believes the chairwoman. Mariánská Týnice, designed by the brilliant architect Jan Blažej Santini at the beginning of the 17th century, began to decay during the Josef reforms, leading to the collapse of the dome in the 1920s. The restoration of the monument, which is now the Museum and Gallery of Northern Plzeň, began only in the 1990s.
The FLOP company complex, for traffic signage, was created on the northern edge of the village of Sulkov along the main route Plzeň-Domažlice. It won in the industrial building category. It was designed by the Henig design office and built by the Plzeň company Remviko and the Cheb-based Dusta. "In terms of mass, materials, and layout, it is one of the most interesting buildings of this year," the jury stated.
The composition is dominated by the imaginatively designed administrative building at the most exposed spot at the edge of the property. In the layout solution, the jury appreciated the simplicity, clarity, and logical connection. The production part is not merely a functional workshop or garage. "It is not an ordinary industrial building, but an imaginative small complex that catches the eye at first glance with its dynamic mass composition and elegant combination of its surfaces in gray and white with yellow accents," the jurors noted.
Three buildings received honorable mentions. The residential building Plzenecká in Plzeň from the architectural workshop of the local AVE and the construction company Stafin. Furthermore, the new Stock complex in Plzeň, designed by the Prague-based Tenel and built by Stavební podnik Klatovy. The last is the renovation of the Hazuka guesthouse in Plzeň by the Plzeň construction company Pegisan. "The fresh façade in bold colors conceals quality spaces. The entrance hall has an idea and, like the façade, reflects an artistic opinion on individualistic architecture of the 21st century," Hostičková stated.
No award was given in the category of transportation and engineering structures. This year's third edition of the competition for the best building of the year in the region was announced by the Plzeň region. Last year, the restored Měšťanská beseda in Plzeň was awarded. It also received the national award for Building of the Year 2005.
