Prague - The Prague 8 Municipality will take over the unfinished Palmova Center. The building will be secured against wind, leaks, and vandalism. At the same time, it will save on maintenance work. This was said by spokesperson Martin Šalek in response to a query from ČTK. The unfinished building will be taken over from the company Metrostav, which was building it for them, but the municipality terminated the contract last year. Prague 8 is currently considering what to do with the building, including the possibility of selling it. The project, costing 1.1 billion crowns, was approved in 2010 and was supposed to include a new municipal headquarters. Approximately half of the stated amount has been used for construction.

"Given the approaching winter months and to prevent damage, the construction site, specifically all parts of the building including the unfinished ones, will be taken over," said Šalek. The exact date of the takeover has not yet been determined.

The municipality plans to ensure the building is protected from negative weather effects and vandalism immediately after taking possession. It aims to protect it from further damage.

"Taking over the construction site for management is more advantageous for the municipality because so far it has been paying Metrostav about 4.7 million crowns annually for so-called maintenance work on the site, and this expense will now be eliminated," added the spokesperson.

The municipal leadership has been considering what to do with the building for some time. Completing the construction could cost between 600 and 800 million, which the municipality does not have. In recent months, representatives of the municipality have started negotiations with the city council regarding the possible sale of the building's shell.

The construction has long been troubled with problems. The previous leadership of Prague 8 challenged the ownership of the building after the 2014 elections, and the property became the subject of legal disputes among Prague 8, the city council, and Metrostav. Eventually, the parties agreed that the building would be completed by Prague 8, for which it was to receive 600 million from the city. This ultimately fell through. Both parties gradually terminated the contract with each other.
