LIBEREC - Another shopping center could be built in the next few years in the city of Liberec, which has a population of one hundred thousand. The German company ECE wants to invest around 100 million euros (almost three billion CZK) on the land in the Perštýn district. This is reported by today's Liberec supplement of Mladá fronta Dnes (MfD). Additionally, two more shopping centers are planned to be built nearby: Fórum Liberec by AM Development on the site of the current Tesco department store and Promenáda by the MEI group on the site of the demolished Textilana. "We believe in Liberec. We are entering here with the knowledge that there are other competing projects. However, not all of them may succeed, we have a chance," says ECE representative Josef Tobek. The company, owned by the owners of the German forwarding company Otto, wants to start construction within the next two years at the latest. They aim to build a shopping center with an area of approximately 30,000 square meters of retail space near the public transport terminal. The shopping center, which would have two to three floors of shops and an additional two floors of parking, is planned to be built on currently vacant land between the streets Na Perštýně, U Sirotčince, and Poutnická, and the main Liberec cemetery. This extensive land was once intended for a completely new neighborhood with terraced houses, but the project failed. The plots are now owned by the company Perštýn Plus. Both parties have already agreed on a potential sale. However, the German investor does not have the construction confirmed yet. The zoning plan does not account for shops in this location. Therefore, ECE has already applied for a change to the zoning plan. The city’s strategy and zoning department is not in favor of the project.
