About Sorrow

Architectural competition for a funeral hall in Roudnice nad Labem

The first event of this year by the civic association Kruh is an evening dedicated to the competition for a funeral hall in Roudnice nad Labem. The goal is not only to present the individual designs but primarily to open a discussion about what character the place of final farewell to the deceased should have. What architectural form should the space where the funeral ritual takes place take? How should the house of sorrow appear externally? To what extent should architecture define the way of saying goodbye to the deceased at a time when funerals no longer have a fixed ritualized form?
In addition to the authors of the awarded proposals, architects who have come up with significantly different concepts of the funeral hall are also invited. Following the individual presentations, there will be a discussion open to the competitors, jury members, and the audience. In the second part of the evening, philosopher Petr Rezek will give a lecture titled The Body in the Funeral Hall.
The public architectural competition for the funeral hall was announced by the city of Roudnice nad Labem in May last year. The competition was organized as a project and should lead to the assignment of a public contract. The competition jury, chaired by architect Jan Jehlík, received 127 proposals for evaluation, which is a high number compared to similar competitions.
The winner of the competition was the design by the Prague studio ADNS, with the second prize shared between Brno architect Pavel Jura and the Prague studio Lennox architects. The jury unanimously awarded the third prize to the team Ján Stempel, Jan Tesař, Lucie Vogelová, and the proposal by architects Jana Moravcová, Tomáš Novotný, Tomáš Zmek.
