Adam Caruso, The Illusion of Modernism

About the difference between orthodox modernism and modern architecture that seeks to communicate with the full reality of contemporary culture.

Adam Caruso
studied architecture at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Before founding his own practice with Peter St John (1990), he worked in the offices of Florian Beigel and Arup Associates. From 1990 to 2000, he taught at the British University of North London, and between 2002-2005 he was a professor of architecture at the University of Bath. He has guest lectured as a professor of architecture at the following schools: Akademie für Architektur in Mendrisio, Harvard Graduate School of Design, ETH Zurich, and the Cities Programme at the London School of Economics. Adam Caruso became a professor of architecture and construction at ETH Zurich in 2011.

Laurent Stalder. Neither Old Nor New. The Search for Autonomous Architecture

The lecture will provide a concentrated overview of Swiss architectural production over the last forty years – the 1970s and their groundbreaking competitions, the 1980s and the emergence of the so-called Analog School, the turn of the century and the shift from a cultural to a more material understanding of architecture, and finally the contemporary production. The lecture will focus on the changing fate of the concept of autonomy.

Laurent Stalder
