Soul - A total of millions of people visited the World Expo 2012, which took place in the South Korean city of Yeosu under the theme Living Ocean and Coast. The exhibition, which closed its doors to visitors today, was opened on May 12 and was dedicated to the future of marine ecosystems. The influx of visitors exceeded all expectations, as it was originally estimated that about a quarter of this number would visit. The preparation for the World Expo took South Korea four years, and investments exceeded ten billion dollars. The exhibition featured pavilions from hundreds of countries and dozens of organizations or companies spread over an area of 271 hectares. The Czech Republic did not participate with regard to the theme of the Expo. South Korea's Expo aimed to raise awareness about climate change and present the ocean as a factor for sustainable development of humanity in the 21st century. In addition to the pavilions, there was a huge aquarium housing 280 species of fish, plants, and marine mammals, including belugas and sea lions. The German exhibition was awarded a gold medal. The next World Expo will take place in 2015 in Milan, Italy, with the theme expressed by the slogan Feed the Planet, Energy for Life. So far, 93 countries have confirmed their participation in the exhibition, but the Czech Republic is not among them yet.
