Brno - Fourteen laureates from among artists, scientists, and athletes received the City of Brno Awards today at the New City Hall from the hands of Mayor Roman Onderka. Among those honored were sociologist Ivo Možný, athletes Jindřich and Jan Pospíšil, and trumpeter Jan Slabák from the Moravanka brass band. "This year's City of Brno Awards was significant. We had, for example, multiple winners in cycling, scientists, associate professors, full professors, former rectors of Masaryk University, in short, personalities who contributed to Brno's importance in Europe," Onderka told ČTK after the ceremony. This year, people submitted 55 proposals for the recognition of 43 individuals, three pairs, and one collective. Among the honorees was scientist Radimír Vrba, who is involved in the construction of the CEITEC scientific center in Brno, while hydrogeochemist Radan Květ received the award for natural sciences. The award for architecture was accepted by Miroslav Spurný, a student of Bohuslav Fuchs, who built, for example, the BVV building at the exhibition grounds and the hospital in Bohunice. The contribution to the acting world was recognized by the Brno representatives with an award for actress Jana Hlaváčková; jeweler Jiří Drlík received an award for his work. The academic painter Zdena Höhmová received an award for her distinctive style and significant contribution to art. In the field of journalism, representatives honored Catholic publicist Josef Koláček, and literary scholar and theaterologist Viktor Kudělka also received an award. The award for upbringing and education was given to Eduard Schmidt, emeritus rector of Masaryk University. According to the councilors, the most significant advocate for international cooperation was Polish Ryszard Grobelny, the long-time mayor of the partner city Poznań. His first deputy accepted the award on his behalf. The sports award went to former representatives in cycling Jindřich and Jan Pospíšil, who won the title of world champions twenty times.
