Litoměřice - Tourists can from today enjoy a new viewpoint of the city of Litoměřice from the tower near St. Stephen's Cathedral. The Litoměřice diocese has opened the tower in cooperation with the city. General vicar Stanislav Přibyl told journalists today that this is the highest point in the center of Litoměřice. Visitors can reach the walkway of the 64-meter-high tower after climbing 200 steps. The tower had been inaccessible to the public for many years, and visitors could only access it on exceptional occasions. The city and the diocese tried to open it on a trial basis in April. At that time, several hundred people came to see it. From the tower, they can see the historic center of the city and its surroundings. The cathedral, next to which the tower stands, was opened in 1668. According to Přibyl, it was supposed to have two towers, but due to unstable ground, it was eventually built without them. Only a wooden bell tower stood nearby. The tower was built between 1883 and 1889 according to the design of Vienna architect Heinrich Ferstel, by Litoměřice builder Franz Sander. The diocese, along with the city, is preparing more projects. Kamil Soukup, the head of the tourism center in Litoměřice, stated that there are plans to open the first hostel in the Ústí region, which should start operating in June in the diocesan home of Cardinal Trochta. During the summer season, a museum of vestments is also expected to open.
