Brno – The City of Brno will buy the grounds of an unfinished, dilapidated railway polyclinic from the Railway Administration for 60 million crowns. Flood prevention measures are planned there. The area is also part of the project for the new Brno railway station, where a new road will be created. This was announced today by the Deputy Mayor, Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL). According to him, a demolition project for the area is ready.
City councilors today recommended that the representatives approve the upcoming acquisition of land from the Railway Administration. The extensive area is considered a ruin, as many buildings have only been partially constructed, such as the polyclinic, garages, and auto repair shops. It also includes an undeveloped plot of land. Before further construction, the city plans demolitions and land remediation.
According to Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS), the city has been striving for the area since 2015. "We have now reached a contract proposal with the Railway Administration, which has also been approved by the Government of the Czech Republic in accordance with the law. The area in Štýřice, which is currently deteriorating completely unused, is crucial not only for building flood prevention measures but also for the project of the new Brno railway station,” Vaňková stated. The current station is already insufficient in capacity, thus a new station is planned to be built for tens of billions in a shifted position closer to the river.
According to Hladík, the demolition project for the area is already completed so that after the purchase, remediation and preparation for revitalizing the flow and valley around the Štýřice waterfront can begin. The city architect’s office is simultaneously preparing the next phase of flood prevention measures. "We plan to build nature-friendly measures and a new recreational area for the residents of Brno. There will be a new footbridge across the river and a local biocenter in protective mode,” added Hladík.
The planned reconstruction of the railway hub also affects the area. "A new road, sidewalk, and public lighting will be built there. A tram track will also be created. In the future, the establishment of shops and services is expected,” added the councilor for property, Róbert Čuma (Pirates).
