PRAGUE - According to experts, there are very few wooden buildings in the Czech Republic compared to countries like Germany or Austria. Among wooden buildings in the country, family houses dominate, followed by various extensions, additions, production and agricultural buildings, sports and recreational structures, or buildings of a social and administrative nature. This is based on a survey by the Czech Chamber of Architects.

"In the area of designing wooden buildings, we are still at year zero, unlike developed countries such as Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Just like the internet when it started a few years ago," said architect Josef Smola, who is the coordinator and chairman of the jury for the Wooden House competition.
According to the survey results, family houses represent 61 percent of wooden construction. A similar percentage (66 percent) of survey participants rated the availability and quality of wooden components on the Czech market as sufficient, while 11 percent travel to buy materials abroad.
According to the survey, the low interest of clients and their ignorance and prejudices towards wood hinder the broader adoption of wooden buildings in the Czech Republic. This is believed by three-quarters of architects, technicians, and engineers. There was also a majority response stating that there is low demand for wooden buildings from investors on the market. About 27 percent of respondents blame the low number of wooden buildings on the absence of grants and tax reliefs, which are common in countries like Austria or Germany. A quarter of the creators believe that the high price of wooden buildings is a disadvantage.
