Olomouc - The new main pharmacy, which was opened today at the University Hospital Olomouc (FNOL), will offer better services to patients and doctors. The construction of the modern pharmacy operation cost more than 100 million crowns and took 19 months, said FNOL director Roman Havlík to journalists today.

The new four-story pharmacy building is located in the hospital complex next to the original pharmacy on I. P. Pavlova Street and is easily accessible from a large part of the hospital area. "Compared to the original premises, we have almost double the number of dispensing points for prescriptions and over-the-counter products. Customers at the new pharmacy are served at seven counters. We started trial operation in mid-December and we are managing to serve everyone smoothly, without waiting," stated chief pharmacist Robert Běhal.
The new pharmacy also offers medical supplies, which were previously issued separately in Puškinova Street near the children's clinic. "People can now choose from a wider range of orthoses, wigs, orthopedic aids, medical footwear, as we really have much more space. We also have a discreet area for individual consultations with patients," said Běhal.
Medicines are organized in 275 drawers, which are behind the pharmacists, so they do not have to go to the warehouse and can serve clients faster. The drug dispensing area is only part of the new building, which has three above-ground and one underground floor. "The new building has allowed us to relocate one of the most demanding workplaces that was previously located in the surgical complex. It is the cytostatics preparation area, where medications for chemotherapy treatment of oncology patients are prepared. We send about 3500 of these infusions and injections to patients each month," Běhal noted.
Other spaces include special boxes for the sterile preparation of infusion solutions, injections, eye drops, or nutrition for premature newborns and severely ill patients. The building also houses a drug control unit, whose staff checks the raw materials for the production of special medications as well as the manufactured medicines.
"The new building also provides better facilities for our staff, of which there are over sixty. The warehouses are larger, through which a truly large volume of medicinal products worth over a billion crowns passes annually. These include all medicines, including centralized ones intended for severe oncology, hemato-oncology, neurological, and other patients," added Běhal.
According to Havlík, the idea for the pharmacy's construction has been considered for 15 years, when the premises of the existing FNOL pharmacy no longer met the requirements. "We are pleased that we managed to see this idea through to a successful conclusion. Our pharmacy serves not only incoming patients but is essential for supplying the entire hospital. The extent and complexity of services combined with the modern environment now clearly place us at the forefront of the field," stated Havlík, according to whom the hospital financed the pharmacy's construction from its own budget.
