The city of Kladno has announced an urban-architectural competition for the revitalization of T. G. Masaryk Street and related spaces in Kladno. It aims to obtain proposals for the conceptual transformation of the pedestrian zone into a representative and pleasant public space.
“We are looking for a design that will invigorate and enhance the very heart of the city, which, through revitalization, will regain its identity, its social and cultural significance. The area in the center of the city deserves to be a public space representing Kladno as a quality and self-confident city,” stated Mayor Milan Volf (Choice for Kladno).
The carefully prepared competition guidelines are the result of more than six months of preparation. This included planning meetings with citizens and businesses, as well as an online survey about the future appearance of the "pedestrian zone." The competition materials include, among other things, a newly developed cycling general plan and an analysis of parking in the city center. The main goal of the proposals will be to make the environment attractive for residents, entrepreneurs, and visitors of all ages, and to enable T. G. Masaryk Street and its surroundings to become a place for the best restaurants, cafes, and the most interesting specialized stores in the city, a place where people will enjoy meeting and spending their free time.
“We consider it important to have a smooth and barrier-free connection between the pedestrian zone, Freedom Square, and the bus station. The comfort for pedestrians and cyclists should also be improved,” elaborated the city’s vision by the relaxed city development councilor Ing. arch. Ondřej Rys (Choice for Kladno) and recalled that “contestants should also prepare a basic proposal for an information system that would replace the multitude of different types of advertisements that currently overwhelm the pedestrian zone. A very important aspect of the proposal should be the improvement of the microclimate by adding missing vegetation, water features, or drinking fountains. ”
In the evaluation jury, in addition to three representatives of the city, there will also be six independent experts with extensive experience. Among them, we can introduce, for example, Ing. arch. Pavla Melková, director of the city detail section at the Prague Institute of Planning and Development, or Ing. Petr Návrat, MSc., who focuses on local economic development and urban regeneration. The jury will distribute rewards totaling 500,000 CZK among the best-awarded proposals. All proposals will subsequently be presented publicly.
The deadline for submitting competition proposals is set for March 31, 2016.
The implementation of the changes to the pedestrian zone according to the winning proposal is planned to begin in 2017. The area in question is connected to other upcoming projects of the city – the revitalization of the arcades along ČSA Boulevard and the reconstruction of the bus station into a modern terminal, the design of which will arise from another architectural competition.
