Brno - The railway station in Brno-Královo Pole is set to undergo repairs costing approximately 1.8 billion crowns. Work is expected to begin in 2020 or 2021. The Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC), which took over the station from Czech Railways this year, is considering demolishing part of the building without replacement, as it has no use, said SŽDC spokesperson Kateřina Šubová to ČTK.

The Královopolské station was built in its current form in the 1950s and has not seen significant modifications since. The station is also difficult to access for the disabled, as platforms must be reached by stairs. "The reconstruction will include tracks, safety equipment, platforms, and the building itself. Elevators will be newly constructed to allow barrier-free access to the trains," Šubová listed.

Demolition of part of the building is considered because 70 percent of the spaces are unused. "The station mainly serves as a transfer point for passengers to buses and public transport," Šubová stated.

The repair will be the largest investment in Brno's stations for many years. The main station is still being delayed due to an unclear future. The Židenice station is planned to be relocated several dozen meters towards Bubeníčkova Street, which is why only the most necessary repairs are being undertaken. There is also not much investment in other smaller stations.

Before the modernization in Královo Pole begins, the dispatch building in Břeclav and Kuřim will be renovated. These buildings have building permits, and work is expected to start next year. SŽDC is also preparing some minor repairs, which will affect the dispatch buildings in Ivančice and the restrooms in Podivín in South Moravia.
