Brno – The reconstruction and modernization of the Královo Pole train station in Brno is set to begin next year. The Czech Rail Authority (SŽ) is finalizing the documentation for the building permit and plans to apply for it in the spring, said SŽ spokesperson Nela Friebová to ČTK. The construction costs are expected to be around 2.5 billion crowns.
The current station has served passengers for about 70 years since the opening of the line to Havlíčkův Brod. However, the generously sized building with a large departure hall is unnecessary for current operations, as the vast majority of people simply pass through the vestibule from public transport to the train or vice versa. Therefore, the current building will be demolished and replaced with a new two-story structure. "It will be fully accessible, featuring a waiting room, restroom, ticket sales, and luggage storage boxes," Friebová listed. Passengers will be able to reach the upper floor via an elevator or escalators. "There will also be food stalls and other commercial spaces in the new building," the spokesperson added.
The modernization will also affect the tracks and platforms. The first platform will be adjacent to the main building, while two others will be island platforms, which is an arrangement familiar to passengers already. However, it will also be possible to access the island platform via an elevator; currently, everyone must use the stairs.
A new feature will be the construction of an underpass behind the station leading to Myslínova Street, which will significantly ease the path for people coming from public transport to the part of Královo Pole behind the station. Until now, they have had to use an underpass under the tracks about 200 meters south of the station building. It will be open without any time restrictions.
In the coming years, a significant reconstruction of the Židenice station in Brno is planned, with the platforms being moved closer to the Kuldova tram stop.
