Brno – Almost a year and a half after the demolition of the old train station building, a new structure was opened today in Brno's Královo Pole. It offers travelers greater comfort and accessibility. This was stated to journalists by Jiří Svoboda, the general director of the Railway Administration. He described the building as beautiful from an architectural perspective. The building is part of the redevelopment of the entire station and adjacent track sections. Work on the remaining platforms and tracks continues and is set to finish this December.
The modernization of the second most significant station in Brno, worth 3.4 billion crowns, began two years ago. Since then, builders have completed two platforms and a section of the expanded underpass. In the new station building, which replaced a structure over 70 years old, people will find ticket offices, restrooms, an elevator, and direct access to the connecting first platform and the underpass.
"The new building clearly brings comfort and an increase in standards as such. Commercial spaces are expected to liven up at the beginning of next year," stated Svoboda. Tickets are currently only sold by Czech Railways. "Transport companies are increasingly filling ticket offices less. Thanks to digitization, people buy tickets on their mobile phones," he added.
Builders still have to complete the reconstruction of the third platform and adjacent tracks. Workers are also extending the underpass under the entire railway area. The main work is expected to be completed this year, with only finishing touches to be made by March.
Access from the underpass to Myslínova Street will be possible after the construction of a footbridge over the Ponávka River, which the city will ensure. "We anticipate that in coordination with the Railway Administration, we will start construction at the turn of October and November, and it will be completed in May next year," noted councilor Petr Kratochvíl.
"Královo Pole station is an example of a comprehensive transport construction that will improve the parameters not only of the tracks and platforms but also create appropriate conditions for passengers thanks to the modern station building. Before the opening of the new main station, it will serve as the most modern railway station in the South Moravian metropolis," stated Minister of Transport Martin Kupka.
The modernization has limited transportation, and passengers also had to use a temporary waiting room. Local residents were also able to feel the impact of the work. Svoboda thanked the locals. Similarly, the mayor of Královo Pole, Andrea Pazderová, stated that they cleared up minor misunderstandings with the residents.
