BRUNTÁL - Today, the city council members placed a time capsule with a message for future generations under the refurbished Bruntál square. Inside the copper tube, there is, for example, a handwritten letter from the mayor, resolutions from the latest council and assembly meetings, the current issue of the city newspaper, a ticket from the public transport system, and a DVD with a documentary film that captures the current state of nature in the Bruntál area. Jiří Ondrášek, a spokesperson for the town hall, told ČTK. "The contents of the capsule will reveal to our successors how the city once looked, how and what kind of people lived in it, how they thought, planned, communicated, and what they used," he added. Today, the representatives of the city buried the tube in the ground and sealed it with concrete to prevent its contents from falling into the hands of thieves. Burying the capsule was part of the ceremonial opening of the main Bruntál square, which has undergone a complete reconstruction in recent months costing almost two million crowns. "We approached the reconstruction as an opening and airing of the entire space, creating the possibility to connect the park area with the castle building and the renovated facades of the surrounding buildings," said Lucie Theimerová from the city's property management department to ČTK. The work focused on changing the layout of the sidewalks to logically connect with the surrounding streets and adapt to the colors of the facades of the neighboring houses. The square features new benches, trash cans, public lighting lamps, and plans for planting red-leaved maples, pines, birches, linden trees, and yews. The start of the reconstruction was accompanied by protests from many citizens, particularly unhappy with the felling of a large number of trees. However, the final appearance of the city center is pleasing to most people. "Finally, we have a part of the city that we can be proud of in front of tourists. Recently, it was quite an unpleasant environment; now the center is beautifully lit and manicured. It now depends on whether local vandals will not destroy it," expressed one citizen in a discussion on the city's website.
