Prague - A new altar has been installed today in the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord designed by architect Josip Plečnik. The traditional component of the church has an unusual shape of a halved oval that seems to float on a podium at the front of the temple. The dynamic elliptical altar is made of white Carrara marble. The four-ton object was carved according to the design of architects Josef Pleskot and Norbert Schmidt by sculptor Petr Váňa, who, along with his collaborators, lowered it into place today using a hoist. The altar will be solemnly consecrated on November 24.
"This is the largest intervention into the interior of the church in its nearly ninety-year history. It will hopefully remain here for at least a hundred years," said priest Jan Houkal to ČTK. According to him, the architects were given a free hand when devising the appearance of the new altar, but primarily his complete trust. "And they did not disappoint," smiles the priest as he watches a group of five men slowly move the smoothly processed translucent stone with a fine gray pattern. When it settles, there will be just a millimeter gap between the marble floor and the altar itself, making the stone seem to levitate in the air.
"It is a very dynamic shape, the floor plan is an ellipse, it is a double halved oval. I was invited to work on this because I had already made a paschal candle from marble for this church," Váňa told ČTK, who has many years of experience working with marble and has a studio in Italy. "I go there to carve my sculptures, I know people in the quarries. It is not easy to find and select the right stone," he explains.
The color white was chosen for the altar to correspond with other stone elements in the church. "And there is no white stone of this size in the Czech Republic," he explains why the stone had to be extracted abroad. "It has been half a year of work since the stone was selected. We chose it ourselves with the architect in Carrara at the quarry, it weighed 25 tons. From it, steps and flooring for the podium in the presbytery were also cut," says Váňa. He and his brother then worked the eight-ton block into the four-ton altar. Given its shape, the final shape can only be partially measured; the sculptor then gave it its final form without the aid of any templates or measurements, working "by eye."
The new altar is set to replace the one from 1992 in the church, which is a landmark in Vinohrady, which was already conceived as a provisional at the time of its inception. The parish decided not to hold a tender but instead approached Pleskot directly. "I believe that this choice, given the value of the space, is correct due to his abilities," Houkal stated earlier. The parish used funds from its own sources for the new altar.
One of the most remarkable sacred monuments in Prague was completed in 1932. Plečnik designed both the building and its interior down to the smallest details using noble materials. Above the main altar made of white marble is a three-meter gilded figure of Christ in a symbolic heart and statues of six Czech patrons.
