Brno - Today is the last day for a long time that people can visit the Brno gem of functionalist architecture - the Tugendhat villa. Next year, the UNESCO monument will close for a planned restoration. The guided tour groups, several of which will pass through the site today, have been fully booked for several weeks. Those who did not make a reservation will only be able to visit the villa after it has been restored, said guide Markéta Plchová to ČTK. This year, over 25,000 people visited the villa, which is a record. The renovation is expected to last at least two years. The villa will then differ at first glance from its current appearance. The white object will no longer stand out from the garden in Brno-Černá Pole, but the building will be light ochre. "The villa will have a color that we managed to trace, it was the seventh layer of exterior plaster," said Iveta Černá, the villa administrator, to ČTK. Experts determined the original color during an international survey from 2003 to 2006. They defined the original color as "the color of fine ochre, which is very close to the color of Italian travertine." The stone is used, for example, in the entrance hall, on staircases, and on sills. This year's record attendance could have been even higher. According to Černá, it is artificially limited because people usually have to book in advance and tour exclusively in a small group with a guide. "If we had free admission and provided people, for example, with audio guides, attendance would be higher," she added. For example, the castle in Lednice, which is part of the second UNESCO heritage site in southern Moravia, the Lednice-Valtice area, welcomed 350,000 visitors this year.
