Žďár nad Sázavou

Žďár nad Sázavou – This year, Žďár nad Sázavou will build a new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists across the Sázava River. It will connect the Farská humna city park with Žižková street and will cost around 3.7 million crowns excluding tax. Its construction is part of a larger project focused on the development of cycling transport in the city, Mayor Martin Mrkos (Žďár – living city) told reporters today. The town hall plans to renovate two other bridges across the river, which are several decades old, next year.

"Those bridges are reaching the end of their lifespan," said the mayor. According to the town hall, it is more worthwhile to build new ones instead of renovating the existing ones. "They are currently being designed. The project will be completed by September 30, 2020, costing 1.1 million for both bridges," the mayor stated.

The city will also have a bridge built on Dr. Drož street. It dates from the late 1970s and leads from the municipal office parking lot to the cultural center. There are currently stairs on it, but the new bridge will be barrier-free. Another reconstruction will concern the bridge across the river a little further down, between Žižkova and Nábřežní streets. This bridge is connected to a staircase that leads past the fortress and the church to the square. It was built in 1963.

The Žďár town hall currently manages 11 bridges, which span not only the Sázava but also the Staviště stream. The technical condition of all the town’s bridges is checked according to Deputy Mayor Ludmila Řezníčková (ANO). "These bridges have emerged from those inspections, and they are first in line," she stated regarding the upcoming constructions.

The architectural study for the new bridges was prepared by city architect Zbyněk Ryška. According to the mayor, the price of the bridges is important for the city, but so is their functionality and appearance. "After all, it is a construction in public space, it will be there for decades, so it is important that it meets some aesthetic standards as well," he said.
