Prague - On Sunday, a ten-day meeting of the World Heritage Committee begins in the capital of Brazil, where discussions will also include the winter review by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Prague. It is expected that the inspectors' report on their visit to Prague at the end of January will be discussed, during which they were interested in the impact of certain buildings on the heritage reserve of the Czech capital. Josef Štulc from the Czech branch of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) said this to ČTK today.
The inspectors came to the Czech capital primarily to view the construction of the city ring road in the Blanka tunnels and to assess their potential negative impact on Prague's monuments. They also focused on the planned construction of a shopping center near Wenceslas Square, the reconstruction of Prague's train stations, and the contemplated construction of tunnels under the National Museum.
In Prague, they met with representatives of official institutions as well as civic associations, and they also spoke with opponents of the repair of Charles Bridge. However, they did not comment on the results of their investigation. They are expected to present their inspection report to the members of the World Heritage Committee in Brazil.
The committee already addressed the issue of the inner Prague ring road last year at its June meeting in Seville, Spain. At that time, it expressed "its deep concern over the potential impacts of the Blanka tunnel complex."
