In the Frankfurt district of Alt-Sachsenhausen, a new scene 'Fliegende Volkstheater' is to be created, which will be realized by Berlin architect Max Dudler based on a competition announced last week. The local studio Jo Franzke Architekten placed second, and the Berlin association Arge Geier Maass Architekten with Sroka Architekten took third place. On a plot of 500m², a construction program for 1200m² will be squeezed in, which will offer a café on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors besides the theater itself.
The jury, led by Jörg Friedrich, commented on the winning project: “The guiding idea of the design focuses on a clear expression of the functions of theater and housing. The urban concept formulates two key and self-evident building masses. The original building is preserved and further enhanced through targeted measures by opening a restaurant to the urban ground floor. The theater forms a simple structure with a gabled roof. The dialogue between both building masses creates an urban unity and a quiet integration into the historical context. The nature of the architecture reflects in a very natural way the distinctive prototype of the folk theater characterized by simplicity and conciseness.”
