Brno - Opponents of the relocation of the Brno railway station will send a statement to the European Commission in Brussels, explaining why it is more advantageous to modernize the station rather than relocate it. The statement is based on the opinions of dozens of independent experts from the fields of construction and architecture. Matěj Hollan from the civil coalition Nádraží v centru said this to ČTK today. The leadership of Brno has long advocated for moving the main station 700 meters south at a cost of more than 20 billion crowns. "We will translate the statement into English and send it to the European Commission. At the same time, we will address it to the city hall, the regional leadership, the Ministry of Transport, the Railway Administration, and the lobbying firm that Brno has hired," Hollan told ČTK. According to him, there has so far been a lack of proper discussion on the issue, and they want to change that. According to Hollan, there are two reasons why the city of Brno insists on moving the station. "The first is the tremendous inertia of the entire project, and the second is the land. It is no secret that the affected lands are owned by people from ODS or people connected to them," Hollan stated. According to the opponents, there is a lack of funding for the relocation, as well as most of the necessary urban planning documents and permits. Opponents of the move have already presented a modernization project for the railway hub in February, in which the cost of reconstructing the most important parts would not exceed ten billion crowns. "The station is insufficient in capacity and a change is necessary in any case. In the statement, we want to emphasize that we are ready to implement the modernization project," added Hollan for ČTK. According to him, it would be faster than relocating the station.
