Brno - The project of the new Brno railway station in a displaced position, which has long been advocated by the local city hall, faces another complication. Environmentalists from the organization Children of the Earth, along with the civic association from Brno-Židenice and several citizens, have filed an appeal against the zoning decision. The placement of the new station will again be addressed by the Brno city council. The city hall leadership criticizes this move. "Writing the third appeal was relatively simple since it was enough to slightly modify our objections. In our opinion, the third zoning decision has again been issued illegally, as, for example, the regional spatial plan, a binding opinion on the impact on the landscape, or a more comprehensive noise study is missing from the file," stated Miroslav Patrik from Children of the Earth. The zoning proceedings began eight years ago, and the zoning decision has been canceled twice. Brno's Deputy Mayor Robert Kotzian (ODS) criticized the activists' actions today. "I consider the appeal by Children of the Earth as extremely irresponsible behavior, which may mean that a new station will not be built in Brno, neither in the River variant nor in the Under Petrov variant," Kotzian said. Kotzian has previously stated that if an agreement on the location of the new station is not found in Brno within three to four years, the current generations will not see a new station. Disputes over the station's location have been ongoing for decades. In 2004, a referendum took place in which the residents of Brno favored maintaining the current location. However, due to low turnout, the result was not binding. Kotzian has previously pointed out that the station in its current location is definitively off the table; the coalition Station in the Center is currently advocating for the location under Petrov, roughly where the so-called Little America is situated. According to the city hall, the project under Petrov is conditional on the construction of an expensive system of three tunnels in complex geological conditions: under the historic core and Žlutý kopec, under Brno-Kohoutovice, and under the hill near the Brno-Žebětín district.
