Brno – Brno is considering the auction of the White House built on Žerotínovo Square in the 1980s. The city has several potential interested parties, and it would receive the highest amount from the auction. The mayor's deputy Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates) told ČTK today. According to him, the building is valued at up to 150 million, but a similar amount would be needed for stabilization and renovation.
Last year, the city was discussing exchanging the White House with Masaryk University, which wanted to build an institute of computer science there. That fell through.
"The city has been looking for buyers for several years. Now we are talking about offering it at auction. The debate is within the coalition initiated by the property management department. It says that investments are necessary for the stabilization of the building. A complete renovation would cost between 150 and 200 million," Koláčný stated. According to him, the city does not have the funds for that. When the auction will take place is still unknown.
Due to the possibility of demolition, architects met in Brno on Monday to highlight the architectural value of the building. Rostislav Švácha from the Institute of Art History at Charles University and the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences compared the White House to the Swiss College in Paris by Le Corbusier.
The White House was designed by authors Miroslav Spurný and František Jakubec. It was created as an administrative building for the then Brno City Committee of the Communist Party. After the revolution, it became the residence of a health center and a medical school.
