Kroměříž March 10 (ČTK) - The reconstruction of the former Žižka Barracks area in Kroměříž should start by the beginning of May at the latest. By then, the city would like to know the name of the company that will repair the former military platform, today's Hanácké náměstí. The revitalization of this neglected area, which is intended to become a second city center in the future, should cost around 33 million crowns. This was stated by the spokesman for the town hall, Pavel Zrna.

The city plans to start modifying the square as early as May, with construction work expected to last at least one year. The area will receive a new surface, including parking spaces, and local roads, utility networks, and public lighting will also be reconstructed. "It is expected that work will start in spring. It also depends on the selection process, but nothing will be postponed," the spokesman said.
According to the project, the square should also include a playground with attractions for children, an amphitheater, and a fountain.
Most of the money needed for the revitalization of the area, about 24 million crowns, was obtained by Kroměříž in the form of a grant from European funds. The rest will be covered by the city itself. "We have financing secured from this year's budget," added Zrna.
Kroměříž's plans for the reconstruction of Hanácké náměstí initially anticipated a larger budget. The city announced a tender last September, according to which total costs were expected to be nearly 13 million crowns higher, but later canceled the contract.
"Companies applied, but the prices were higher than we wanted. The city would not be able to pay for these bids," explained Josef Koplík, head of the town hall's development department. According to him, the two contracts mainly differed in the volume of earthworks. Therefore, the area of the square will ultimately be slightly larger, and a slight reduction in its facilities is planned compared to the original plan.
The area of the former barracks, located near the historical center of the Hanácké city, is also of interest to several other investors. A private developer is preparing to build a multifunctional complex with residential buildings and commercial spaces in the immediate vicinity of the square. They plan to start construction by the end of this year. Furthermore, in the future, a university should be located directly at Hanácké náměstí. The city intends to lease one of the former military buildings to the European Polytechnic Institute from Kunovice in the Uherské Hradiště region.
