Opava - Interest in the central part of the former Dukla barracks area, which is primarily to be developed into apartments, has so far come from four developers. The city also extended the deadline for submitting offers by two months at their request. Originally, interested parties could apply to purchase the land until the end of January. This was announced today by the mayor of Opava, Tomáš Navrátil (ANO).
"So far, we have had informal discussions with the four developers who have expressed interest. They also pointed out that the deadline for submitting offers is short for them. We want to receive well-prepared offers, so we decided to extend the deadline,” the mayor said.
The city and its representatives have been dealing with the use of the multi-hectare site for the last ten years. The previous leadership in Opava had even selected a developer who was supposed to build on the vacant plots and renovate five historical buildings. However, this collaboration did not proceed.
"In the part of the barracks that we want to sell, primarily apartment buildings should be constructed. In total, there could be 250 to 300 new apartments here,” the mayor stated. He added that the area is very attractive due to its proximity to the city center, and Opava is in great need of available apartments.
The barracks complex covers approximately 110,000 square meters. Several companies operate in one part of it. The city now wants to sell the central part, which is 3.5 hectares large. The third part, which contains several historical buildings, remains under city ownership for now. This is likely to stay that way. The city hall would like to preserve the buildings and create starter apartments within them. A study is currently being developed.
Originally an artillery barracks, they were built in Opava in 1889. The construction of the historical buildings involved the city construction engineer, painter, founder, and director of the City Museum in Opava, Moritz Hartel. During the communist regime, up to 1,000 soldiers were conscripted into the complex annually. The army vacated the facilities in 2007.
