Pardubice - The demolition of seven buildings in the former Masaryk Barracks area in Pardubice will be completed in the first quarter of next year. Immediately after that, the city plans to start building an elementary school there. The demolition company has been doing preparatory work since the summer, and now larger machines are beginning to work on the site. This was reported to journalists today by city representatives.

"The demolition company took over the site at the beginning of summer. The buildings have been stripped, the windows, all wooden elements, floors, and ceramic tiles are gone. Wood, iron, concrete, and other materials will be sorted. They will be taken to the recycling line, and part of it will be used as crushed material for other constructions," said Deputy Mayor Jakub Rychtecký (Žijeme Pardubice).

The demolition on the site is extensive, although the city is not demolishing all the buildings. The company will tear down the multi-storey main building at the entrance gate, which faces Dražkovice, and then continue with some of the others that extend towards the street Pod Břízkami. "It is a relatively extensive municipal investment project during this period. Sorting is taking place at the demolition site so that there is no issue with material acceptance and demolished rubble at the landfill," said Martin Hebr from the property and investment department of the Pardubice city hall, who is responsible for technical supervision.

Increased vehicle traffic is expected. Cars will drive towards Dražkovice and will not pass through the city. Material will be transported to SK-EKO Pardubice in Semtín via I/37. "It is also agreed that noisy work will be carried out during regular working hours, definitely not on weekends or late in the evening," added Hebr.

An auxiliary parking lot remains in the barracks area, although its size has been slightly reduced by the demolition work. Drivers use it heavily because it costs five crowns a day, and nothing on weekends. "We have managed to agree with the company carrying out the demolition work that the parking lot at the Masaryk Barracks will operate until the end of the demolitions. Its capacity has been reduced by half," said Deputy Mayor Jan Hrabal (ANO).

After the demolition is completed, the city intends to start building the elementary school right away. According to the project documentation, the city expects that the school construction will take 18 months. "We are targeting the opening of the school for the year 2027/2028, but considering the schedule, we realistically see that the school will be operational in 2028/2029," said Rychtecký.

The new elementary school will provide facilities for 540 students. The city will pay nearly 23 million crowns for the demolition. The costs for the school project have been estimated at 976 million crowns. This is the largest investment in education since 1989. "We have applied for a grant of 350 million crowns. However, the outgoing government did not allocate any funds to the fund, we are below the line and are waiting for the release of the funds," said Rychtecký.
