To find a solution for the Brno Exhibition Center that allows for the development of exhibition activities and revitalizes its less utilized parts - this was the task of the international urban planning conceptual competition announced by the city of Brno in May 2017. The organizer of the competition was the City Architect's Office. From a total of twenty proposals, four advanced to the second round, which their authors further developed. In mid-January, the best proposals were evaluated by an expert jury. The Brno City Council today approved the results of the competition.

The jury did not award a first prize. The second prize went to the proposal by Brno architects Milan Rak and Pavel Rada from the design offices Archteam and RadaArchitekti. The third prize was awarded to architects from the AiD team studio.

"The choice between the two awarded proposals was not easy; each has a different perspective on the possible urban planning solution for the exhibition area. The jury did not award a first prize because none of the proposals optimally addressed the competition's requirements, primarily due to the complexity of the exhibition area and its surroundings," specified city architect Michal Sedláček, who was also a jury member.

The goal of the competition was to find a solution that would allow for the successful continuation of the exhibition functions of the area, as well as the development of less utilized parts and a greater accessibility of the area to the general public for everyday use. The assignment also concerned the adjacent area of the transportation company's depot, waterworks, and the recreational area Riviéra.

"The conceptual urban planning competition fulfilled what we expected from it - it brought a portfolio of proposals and themes that we can use as a basis for the assignment of a territorial study. However, first, it is necessary to evaluate the ideas and themes and adjust them to meet the requirements of all parties involved in the development of the exhibition center. The proposals included, for instance, a new solution for the western entrance of the area or a proposal for storage and service facilities for the exhibition center. A new connection could be created between Lipová Street and Riviéra for pedestrians and cyclists," added Sedláček.

The competition took place in two phases. In addition to representatives from the city and Brno Trade Fairs, the jury also included independent experts with international experience. The meetings were held on January 11 and 12 directly at the exhibition center. For each proposal, the jury also heard assessments from invited experts in urbanism, transportation, exhibition operations, and economics. People will be able to familiarize themselves with the proposals at an exhibition in the coming months.
