Mikulčice (Hodonín region) - There are nine architectural proposals for the modernization and adjustment of the archaeological park in Mikulčice in the Hodonín region. Jiří Klement, spokesman for the South Moravian Region, said this to ČTK today. Proposals could be submitted until Thursday evening. The renovation will require several tens of millions of crowns. An expert committee will select the winning project at the end of July. The archaeological park consists of the remnants of the fortified settlement Valy, which was one of the main centers of the Great Moravian Empire. A decision is expected within two weeks on whether the site will be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The creators of the proposals will present their projects to the expert committee from July 20 to July 22 directly in Mikulčice. Only then will the details of the plans and the overall estimated costs be known. The modifications to the complex will be extensive. At the Valy settlement in Mikulčice, visitors can see the remnants of the surrounding walls of local churches. It is planned that they will be rebuilt with stones during the construction work, up to a height of one meter, to make the entire exhibition clearer. All paths will be restored. There are plans to adjust the main visitor building and other exhibitions. The construction of a new base for archaeologists, which will be part of the project, will cost 25 million crowns. The original structure burned down due to a technical fault. In the future, there are plans to connect Mikulčice and the neighboring Slovak Kopčany, where a Great Moravian church stands - one of the oldest Christian temples in Central Europe. The Morava River separates the two sites. A footbridge for tourists will span the river within two years.
