Brno - The city of Brno and the South Moravian Region are striving to connect the new and existing railway station, which is to become a commercial and social center, with a city rapid transit system. Experts will now examine whether changes to the project for remodeling the Brno railway junction could jeopardize the chances of obtaining European subsidies or delay the preparation of project documentation. At a meeting today, members of the committee, which includes city and regional representatives as well as representatives from the investor, the designer, and Czech Railways, agreed on this. The idea for an elevated rapid transit system was introduced last November by Brno councilor Josef Veselý (KDU-ČSL). The project envisions that from the new main station, which will be relocated 800 meters south of the current one, an elevated rapid transit line would run across the center of Brno along the route of the existing railway. According to Veselý, this solution eliminates the main drawbacks of the two previous options. Compared to keeping the station in its existing position, it significantly alleviates pressure on the city center, while avoiding the costly relocation of the tram hub of public transportation to the new station. According to the proposal, only freight and long-distance connections will travel along the modernized railway corridor that runs outside the city center. Regional lines will be transferred at the location of the new station to an elevated dual-track rapid transit line, which will follow the route of the current railway and lead to the existing main station located in the historical core of the city. "The members of the committee assessed the proposal and assigned two essential tasks for the final decision on whether to incorporate it into the project for the remodel of the railway junction. The investor, which is the Railway Infrastructure Administration, will evaluate whether the construction of the rapid transit line could jeopardize the acquisition of European subsidies. The city of Brno will also find out whether there could be significant delays in urban planning and construction proceedings," said Brno mayor Roman Onderka to journalists today. The project for the reconstruction of the railway junction in Brno, associated with relocating the station nearly a kilometer to the south, was initiated by the previous leadership of Brno under the ODS. After the elections, when the ODS went into opposition and the main critics of the relocation from the Green Party entered the coalition, a second alternative project with the station in its original position emerged. During the summer, the city commissioned a professional analysis to assess the advantages and disadvantages of both options. Based on its results, the original project is now being adjusted. So far, the total reconstruction costs have been successfully reduced from 30 to about 20 billion crowns.
