In Ostrava, the parish garden will begin to be renovated in April

Ostrava - The transformation of the parish garden behind the bishopric building will begin in the second half of April in Ostrava. The improvement of the area between Havlíčkovo nábřeží and Střelniční Street will cost 11.7 million crowns. This was announced today by the spokesperson of the magistrate, Andrea Vojkovská.

"The area along Střelniční Street behind the bishopric has long been in disrepair, and in recent years it has been devastated by passing vehicles from a private company that used the park as an entrance to their courtyard. Given its location in the very center of the city, near the Church of St. Wenceslas, and in an area where city walls stood in the Middle Ages, the current appearance of this place is truly undignified," said Deputy Mayor Kateřina Šebestová (ANO).

The garden will consist of two distinct parts. The higher section will be sunnier, featuring a grassy area and a playground. In contrast, the lower part will have an orchard, offering more shaded areas.

"The connecting element of both levels will be a terrace located under the plane tree, which will protect its root system while providing additional usage options for the garden. The terrace will be linked to the existing retaining walls and stairs, which will be reconstructed and fitted with railings," the spokesperson added.

New trees will also be planted in the garden. Benches, bicycle racks, trash bins, and lighting will be added. The garden will be fenced and will have lockable entrance gates. During the day, the park will be accessible to the public; it will be locked at night.

The city drew inspiration from parks in other cities, such as in Litomyšl or the monastery garden in Příbor. "This will be a completely new concept for a park. Even though it will be more tranquil and serve for relaxation, smaller social events can still take place there. The company will start work on the parish garden in the second half of April," Šebestová stated.

The work will last 30 weeks. Before the construction modifications, 11 deciduous trees and six coniferous trees had to be cut down. Most of them, according to the spokesperson, were damaged or overaged.
