Ostrava - In the Ostrava district of Třebovice, a gymnasium opened today after several years of renovation, which is used by the Orl Jednota Ostrava-Třebovice. The building from 1947 had to be closed in 2022 due to the emergency condition of the roof, and two years later it was further damaged by floods. The repair costs were approximately 5.7 million crowns, and the city provided financial support. Gabriela Pokorná, a spokesperson for the municipality, told ČTK.

Since 2024, the roof and the interior of the building have been gradually repaired. First, workers removed the damaged roof and replaced the load-bearing elements. The building was temporarily covered, and then a new roofing was laid and the chimney repaired. At the same time, work was ongoing in the interior. The gymnasium features a new ceiling, electrical installations, and lighting. The floors were also restored, including the replacement of damaged parquet.

"Support for sports infrastructure in Ostrava is not just about large arenas and top-level events, but also about smaller projects that have a direct impact on the daily lives of people in individual city parts. The gymnasium in Třebovice is a great example of how meaningful and targeted investment can reopen an important space for the community and restore conditions for children and the public to engage in sports," said Mayor Jan Dohnal (Spolu).

The reconstructed gymnasium will provide facilities for a range of sports activities. It will be available for football, futsal, floorball, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, aerobics, pilates, and children's exercises. It will also serve as a space for cultural events and community activities.

The mayor reminded that in the past, the city also built a new sports hall in the district near Třebovický park. The building, costing over 81 million crowns, opened three years ago and is used not only by sports clubs but also by the public.

The city allocated 2.9 million crowns for the modernization of the gymnasium, and it was also contributed to by the region and the city district. "Our Orlovna will, we hope, continue to be a place where not only current but also future generations will meet for sports, cultural events, or amateur theater performances, which have a long-standing tradition here," said the mayor of the Orl Jednota Ostrava-Třebovice, Peter Galvas.
