Brno - With the decision of whether to keep the Brno train station in the city center or move it a kilometer to the south, city representatives will be assisted by experts from Cityplan and the Faculty of Transportation Engineering of the Czech Technical University (ČVUT). The partnership of both organizations won the selection procedure and will now prepare an analysis comparing both options for the future railway route through the city. If everything goes smoothly, the results of the study will be known by mid-July, Deputy Mayor Martin Ander (SZ) told reporters today. The Cityplan and ČVUT partnership beat three other candidates in the selection process. The study will be conducted for 3.5 million crowns, which is, according to Ander, less than the representatives had allocated. Politicians previously decided that the study will compare both options from four perspectives: railway operations, the perspective of passengers who want the most comfortable travel possible, urban development of the city, and finally, the costs of both construction options. In the second part of the project, the risks will be examined if the city decides to choose one path or the other. Representatives of all political parties in Brno will meet to discuss the conclusions of the analysis. In the case of relocating the station, the final decision will rest with the city council; otherwise, it will be with the city assembly. The previous assembly had already agreed to the relocation. The project to reconstruct the Brno railway junction, which includes the construction of a new station in the southern part of Brno, nearly a kilometer from its current location, was pushed through by the previous Brno coalition led by the ODS. In addition to the Civic Democrats, it is also supported by the opposition Communists and the Christian Democrats, who joined the new Brno coalition after the elections alongside opponents of the so-called station relocation - the Social Democrats, Greens, and independents from the Brno 2006 group. The previous Brno coalition supported the project even though the majority of referendum participants expressed opposition to it.
