Valtice (Břeclavsko) - In recent days, the historical electric elevator in the castle of Valtice in the Břeclav region, one of the oldest facilities of its kind in the Czech Republic, has regained its original appearance. The elevator was in very poor condition. The facility had been closed for many years, and conservators did not even present it to visitors. Now, people can peek into the machine's cabin on the first floor of the castle. "The repair was complicated. The technicians took care of the engine room, and the restorers fixed the cabin," said the castle's steward Darina Horká to ČTK today. The elevator has restored lighting, a seat, and cleaned and re-silvered mirrors. The adjustments cost about 200,000 crowns. Interestingly, experts still do not know exactly when the elevator was created. According to them, it was constructed between 1890 and 1910. Evidence that it was in operation as early as the beginning of the last century is also supported by a new unconventional find. During the repair, restorers discovered one side of Austrian newspapers published in 1911 under the linoleum on the elevator floor. The cabin once transported the owners of the castle to the first and second floors of the building. After the nationalization of the monument, the elevator was used for transporting heavy items. Then it broke down and was non-functional for many years. Valtice Castle is considered one of the highlights of Baroque architecture in the Czech Republic. The Baroque garden and the historical colonnade Rajstna are also accessible with the monument. The site has been part of the Lednice-Valtice area, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
