Brno – The form of municipal apartments on Křídlovická Street in Brno will be determined by an architectural competition. According to the brief approved by the leadership of the Brno-střed city district, at least 55 apartments are to be created. The competition, organized by the Office of the City Architect (KAM) of Brno, started today. Interested parties can submit proposals until July 31, and the winning solution is expected to be announced in the second half of the year, the city district informed in a press release. If everything goes according to plan, the apartments could be completed by 2030.

The apartments will be created in a new building that will replace the inadequate houses on Křídlovická Street. "We had the technical condition of the houses professionally assessed. The structural survey and expert assessment for the renewal of the housing stock indicate that the existing buildings from the 1920s suffer from numerous defects. Repairing them would therefore be very costly," stated Martin Drdla (ANO), councilor of the Brno-střed city district. The houses at Křídlovická Street 57 and 59 are already vacant according to the city hall, and tenants have been provided with alternative housing.

According to Drdla, the new building should create a quality living environment that adapts to the needs of the tenants. "The designs must take into account current environmental requirements for sustainable urban development, such as blue-green infrastructure, as well as the heritage protection of the city's skyline and other specific limitations such as the protective zone of the railway," said Petr Bořecký, a municipal councilor and city of Brno councilor for urban planning (formerly ANO).

According to KAM director Jan Tesárek, Brno is currently facing a significant shortage of housing supply of all kinds. "The aim of the announced competition is not only to efficiently utilize city land and solve the inadequate condition of the buildings and the wider locality, but also to offer people affordable modern and ecological urban housing close to the center," added Tesárek. The housing stock of the Brno-střed city district currently comprises about 4,000 apartments.
