Brno - Brno wants to build starter apartments for young people. It currently has only 60 and is building another 100. About 1000 are needed, said the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) to journalists today. A four-year lease with the condition of registering permanent residence in Brno will cost 57 CZK per square meter, which is about 2000 monthly for an apartment of 35 square meters. According to Hladík, people should then have the opportunity to save some money for a mortgage for their own housing alongside the rent. In addition to the construction of hundreds of new apartments, any city district can now use an empty apartment as a starter, which was not previously possible. Thus, Brno wants to retain young people and students.

Over 100 starter apartments are being created for tens of millions of crowns at eight different locations by constructing new buildings or renovating old ones. This relates to the streets of Vojtova, Křenová, Bratislavská, and Terézy Novákové. In the future, the city also plans to build part of the starter apartments in the areas of Kaménky, Západní brána, or Kamenný vrch.

The city has commissioned a survey focused on the housing of young people in Brno. About 1000 people responded. According to Hladík, it was found that the young generation is primarily interested in the price of housing and transportation accessibility, while they do not pay much attention to the age of the apartment or the proximity of family members. "We know that most young people want to live in their own or cooperative apartment during their lives. They do not positively assess the current housing offer in Brno; they lack starter apartments with subsidized rent or low-cost and small apartments for rent or purchase," Hladík stated.

Brno has nearly 30,000 apartments. New rental rules came into effect in the fall. They established a minimum rent for new tenants in city districts, while for current tenants, it remains the same. As a result, rents have increased in some areas, while they were already higher in others. A condition is that new tenants register for permanent residence. A new feature is also the uniform rent for social and starter apartments of 57 CZK per square meter or the electronic application for apartments.
