Brno - The representatives of the city of Brno today approved a point according to which the city will later purchase land opposite Zvonařka for the construction of the relocated railway station. According to Deputy Mayor Robert Kotzian (ODS), this means a right to purchase for the city, but does not create an obligation. The opposition criticized the proposal because there are two options being considered for the station's location, and neither is certain. According to the Green Party, the commitment to purchase is therefore premature. If the Ministry of Transport, as the investor, chooses the option under Petrov and not at Zvonařka, the city will not buy the land, Kotzian told ČTK. According to Kotzian, the contracts for future agreements for the purchase of properties owned by companies ČSAD Brno holding, Tourbus, and Torea Plus will only save the city time. "If the ministry chooses the option at Zvonařka, the city will have the right to conclude purchase contracts. However, it will not have the obligation in case the ministry chooses the other option," Kotzian said. According to him, in the case of building the station under Petrov, the contract would either expire or the parties would agree to terminate it. Kotzian thus refuted the Greens' claims that the city would buy the land regardless, even though it does not know what the ministry's decision on the station's location will be. "If the option under Petrov turns out to be more suitable in the end, the city will purchase the land unnecessarily. Most of it will not be needed, and the price will be lower," pointed out the chairman of the Brno Greens, Martin Ander. He argued that it would be more appropriate to wait. The candidate for mayor from KDU-ČSL, Klára Liptáková, expressed similar views. "We advocate for the relocated station, but the decision on purchasing the land should have been postponed until the new council," Liptáková told ČTK. Nevertheless, the councilors approved the proposal. There were 34 votes in favor, two against, and nine abstained. The modernization of the railway station in Brno has been discussed for a long time. The coalition composed of ODS and ČSSD and some other political parties tends to favor the relocation by 800 meters towards the river opposite Zvonařka, while the Greens and activists want to keep the station in the center under Petrov. Activists tried to hold a referendum simultaneously with the municipal elections, but they failed due to issues with signatures.
