Brno - The council of Brno today approved the announcement of a public transport-urban planning competition worth nearly nine million crowns, from which the design of the so-called South Center of the city will emerge in case a new railway station is built under Petrov. This was stated to journalists today by Deputy Mayor Martin Ander (SZ). According to him, there is only a design for the South Center for the variant of the station's location by the river, but it is lacking for the second variant. Therefore, it is necessary to have it created so that people have comparable information about both options when deciding in a referendum about the station's location, Ander stated. The council adopted a resolution based on Ander’s proposal. "The only existing study on the development of the South Center considers moving the Brno station outside the city center," Ander pointed out. According to him, both station location variants will be evaluated by the state investor, the Administration of Railway Transport Infrastructure. "It will also examine the connection to the city’s development. If we only have one option on the table, the investor will not have complete information," Ander stated further reasons for acquiring a design for the variant under Petrov. Comparable data on both options, in his opinion, will lead to the creation of dignified conditions for the referendum and to open communication with people about the project that will change life in Brno for decades to come. The city leadership has allotted two months to prepare the public competition brief and discuss its form with the professional public. "Then we will announce the competition, and we want to have results by the end of the year," Ander said. The competition will have two rounds, allowing the city to provide feedback on the proposals, which can be processed again. The issue of modernizing the railway station in Brno has been addressed for nearly 100 years. There are two construction variants for the station. One would move it 800 meters closer to the river opposite Zvonařka, the other 150 meters under Petrov. Both options would cost around 20 billion crowns, which the European Union is expected to cover largely. The study by the Administration of Railway Transport Infrastructure will indicate which option is more suitable. It will be completed in 2016, when a referendum of Brno residents on where they want the station to be located is also scheduled to take place.
