Brno – In connection with the reconstruction of the Brno railway junction with the station relocated to a different position, part of two protected buildings in the city slaughterhouse area on Masná and Porážka streets is to be demolished. The construction of the Přerov line on an embankment section of the Komárovská connector will directly affect valuable cultural monuments, Masná burza and the Municipal Slaughterhouse halls by architect Bohuslav Fuchs from the 1930s. However, in the event of modernizing the junction with the station in the center, there would be no interference with either monument. So far, the city council has not presented to the Brno public the fact that due to the relocation of the station, partial demolitions of two very significant architectural cultural monuments will occur. The functionalist building Masná burza (Masná 34) will have its northern wing demolished, and even after that, the track will run at the level of its second floor in close proximity to the rest of the structure. The original administrative function of the building will subsequently be excluded. The embankment will also cut through the roof of the large hall of the Municipal Slaughterhouse, thereby significantly disrupting its cultural-historical value. The Municipal Slaughterhouse is owned by the city through Brněnské komunikaci a.s. Masná burza has a private owner, the Prague company PESTR spol s r.o. This company has invested tens of millions into the modernization of the building in recent years. Currently, the Railway and Transport Administration s.o., one of the investors in the reconstruction of the railway junction, is negotiating with this company about the purchase of Masná burza with funds from the project budget. There is also consideration of "de-classifying" the previously protected buildings. The construction of a concrete railway embankment across the area of the municipal slaughterhouse will also disrupt the genius loci of this area, which has not been very well known to the public until now. After the demolition of the majority of buildings in the former industrial area Vaňkovka, the destruction of the oldest Brno apartment building U sedmi švábů, and the devastation of Velký Špalíček in previous years, the city is losing another part of its cultural history. The Heritage Conservation Department of the City of Brno stated in its binding opinion from December 9, 2005, that “it considers the proposed solution of the railway body's intersection with the slaughterhouse hall to be a solution lacking respect for the values of the protected area of the former slaughterhouse and believes that it is one, but not the only, possible variant of integrating the cultural monument into new contexts.” Svatopluk Bartík from the Nádraží v centru coalition says: “Despite the evidently critical stance towards this variant, the officials ultimately issued consent to the devastation of cultural monuments. According to us, this happened under political pressure related to the entire station relocation project.”
