The Liberec Faculty of Architecture has once again brought Ještěd out of its cage for the eleventh time. This happened on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in the large studio spaces of the school, attended by all students, teachers, friends, and curious onlookers, for whom a rich buffet and live music was prepared by the Liberec Big’O’Band. A five-member jury was also present, selecting the best works from nearly a hundred student projects from the winter semester. The overall winner was Marek Nedelka from the 3rd year with a design for the mining village of Špania Dolina in central Slovakia.
In the jury of JFK#11, sat:
Martin Jančok /P-L-U-R-A-L/ Pavel Joba /M1 architects/ David Kraus /Architecture s.r.o./ Jana Moravcová /Jana Moravcová architectural office/ Petr Štefek /HOK Architects/
The decision-making was again not easy, as the jury chose from a wide spectrum of themes and scales, from door handle designs, traditional housing, and urban structure enhancements to experiments with textiles and aristology or the pavilion of the Venice Biennale. The most appealing assignment was found by the jury in the studio of Radek Suchánek and his assistants Petr Janoš and Vladimír Balda, where a large group of students worked on small interventions in areas affected by mining – in the towns of Horní Jiřetín and Špania Dolina. The result of their intensive work is printed newspapers for local residents featuring all the projects. The content and form of the presentation of the entire studio scored full points, so it is no surprise that most of the awarded works, including the winner, originated from here.
For a long time now, it has been customary in Liberec for students and the public to vote on the best projects. Everyone has the right to place three yellow stickers on their classmates' boards. A novelty of this year's edition was the announcement of the most popular project – which became “From the Quarry” by Adam Kössler from the first year of master's studies.
